Becoming a CAP Pilot - How to tackle the CAP Form 5
In order to fly for Civil Air Patrol, a member must work with a CAP flight examiner annually to verify proficiency. Here are the steps needed for your initial CAP Form 5 evaluation:
For reference, here is the link to the CAP National site in regards to the below listed information
Another good reference is the CAPF 5 On-line Course
In addition to all the normal knowledge required for a Flight Review (FARs, AIM, weather, etc...) you are required to follow the below steps:

For CAP cadet orientation pilot privileges, you will need to know CAPP 52-7 |
CAPR 60-1, CAPF 5 Annual Exam - Powered |

Uniform information
Uniforms help CAP members identify with one another and the fine organization to which we are so proud to belong. Taking the time and effort to assemble and wear our uniforms correctly directly reflect on us, our unit, the whole of the Civil Air Patrol, and the U.S. Air Force. It is a matter of pride and professionalism. In order to do it right you will need to have a personal copy of CAP Manual 39-1, CAP Uniform Manual, which governs dress and appearance standards for CAP personnel.
Another resource you might find useful is the uniform mini-posters
You are required to maintain Grooming and Weight standards while wearing the Air Force Style uniform. See Attachments 1 & 2 in CAPM 39-1. The alternative is the CAP distinctive uniforms.
Below is a reference for procuring items necessary for various style uniforms authorized for Civil Air Patrol members.
Seniors:
- The Blue Polo and Grey Pant combination. This is a CAP distinctive uniform, and the most basic CAP uniform for Senior members. It is often used for duties at Mission Base or performing Urban Direction finding missions.
- Blue polo
- Grey pants - procured commercially at a retailer (a la Dockers)
- Black Oxfords. Can be the same shoes procured for use with the Air Force blue uniform.
- The Flightsuit - be sure that the flightsuit you procure is Nomex!
- If you meet the Grooming and Weight standards, you may wear the Air Force style flightsuit (Nomex® CWU-27/P)
- If you do not meet the Grooming or Weight standards, you may wear the CAP distinctive flightsuit
- In either case, you must procure black all leather boots (not jungle boots)
- You can purchase the Velcro/hook & loop here
Cadets and Seniors:
- The Utility Uniform (ABU/BDU). Note: Sq 44 has some sizes available for a small fee in both the ABU/BDU coat and pants. Please inquire with the Logistics Officer.
- The ABU/BDU coat NOTE: There is a summer weight (lighter material) and winter weight (heavier material)
- ABU/BDU Pants NOTE: There is a summer weight (lighter material) and winter weight (heavier material)
- Civil Air Patrol name tape
- Last Name tape
- CAWG (California Wing) shoulder patch
- Sew-on CAP insignia for collars (Senior members only)
- Approved belts are tan (ABU) or blue with black buckle (BDU)

- Footwear needs to be a black, polishable boot, 8" or higher. "Jungle boots" are not approved for aircrew members. Trousers will be bloused over the top of the boot. Socks are black. Most online or brick and mortar Army/Navy surplus are good sources.
- You must wear a tan crew neck tee shirt (ABU) or black crew neck tee shirt (BDU). You can find them at Target, or other such fine retail stores.
- The Blue Uniform. Due to the uniform variations, as well as gender specificity, please refer to the CAP Manual 39-1, CAP Uniform Manual
- Clothing items are available at either Travis AFB (must have CAPID to get on base and to purchase items), or Vanguard
